What’s Your Travel Style?

There are many different styles of travel and it’s hard to pick just one because each vacation is different. We travel for different reasons whether it is to see family, discover new destinations, visit favorite places, or just get away for some down time.

A beautiful sun salutation! Sunrise in Orange Beach, Alabama.

Travel and tourism have also been shown to be good for us in so many ways. One example is an international travel study (Zimmerman, Neyer, 2013) which found that students who traveled even for long or short periods had positive changes in self-confidence, extroversion, and decreases in negative personality issues. They were also more open to social situations. So, travel has positive effects on our social development no matter what your particular travel style is.

My husband and I differ on our travel styles sometimes. His job keeps him on the phone most of the time and his travel style is to just get to the beach and relax. My style is more “see all of the things” and I like to be immersed in the energetic city atmosphere. That doesn’t mean that I don’t enjoy his style, but we try to plan so that we can get both styles in one trip, usually.

We also love the “food, drinks, and fun” vibe of any vacation so that is a travel style we share.

What about travel destinations?

Do you like returning again and again to your favorite destinations? We do, but we try to choose new destinations more than just revisiting our favorites. It’s hard to complete your bucket list just returning to the same places. Other reasons may influence the location too. Visiting family, time constraints, or nostalgia may be a factor in revisiting destinations. It’s important not to get in a travel loop of just going to the same places. There are so many amazing places to see and experience!

What do you wear on vacations?

Do you dress to impress on vacation or is classy comfort in your suitcase? I usually strive for comfort all the way, but bring a few outfits that can pass for dressy if needed. There have been many times that I bring after-five outfits that I think I will wear and guess what? They don’t even get taken out of my suitcase. Of Course, the trip activities will help determine the attire too, but comfortably casual is relaxing to me if there is a lot of walking or adventure activities. Packing light is also a must for our usual travel style so that figures into the style equation as well.

Side note: Betabrand is one of my go-to travel staples because the jeans and dress pants feel super comfortable like yoga pants and don’t wrinkle in my suitcase!

How does transportation to your destination factor into your style?

Do you love to drive on a long road trip, a romantic train journey or is a quick flight the transportation of choice? I love getting to the destination as quickly as possible so flying is my favorite choice of transportation. Sometimes, budgets, the location of the destination, or other factors will be a deciding factor in how you get to your vacation location.

There are some remote locations that we’ve visited that are only accessible by train, boat, or car. It might require a combination of modes of transportation. It’s important to take all of those factors into consideration when planning your trip. The goal is maximum enjoyment for the vacation. So, if a combination of transportation is required to get to your destination make it enjoyable and part of the journey.

Final Thoughts on Travel Style

Many different factors go into your travel style and it is not a fixed identity. Travel style is always changing to meet the situation and that is perfectly okay. There are some travel style ideals that we all lean to if we had the perfect conditions and that is okay too. The most important element is to keep traveling and having fun!
