Are Birkenstocks Good for Travel and Walking? Honest Review

Finding the best summer travel shoes can be tricky, especially when your vacations involve lots of walking. I’ve worn Birkenstocks through European cities, Disney parks, cruise ports, beach towns, and sightseeing days when we walked more than 10 miles. After trying several styles, they are still the sandals I pack most often for warm-weather trips.

So, are Birkenstocks actually good for travel and long days of walking? For me, yes, but only after they are properly broken in and worn in the right situations.

The contoured cork footbed gives me more support than a flat sandal or flip-flop, and most styles are easy to pair with shorts, dresses, and casual travel outfits. However, classic cork Birkenstocks are not waterproof (there is a cork sealer), and I would not wear a brand-new pair for a full sightseeing day without breaking them in first.

In this honest Birkenstock travel review, I’ll explain which styles have worked best for me, how they feel after miles of walking, how long they take to break in, and when I pack Chacos or sneakers instead.

After trying many popular comfort shoes over the years, I still keep coming back to Birkenstock sandals.

Everyone’s feet are different, so what works perfectly for me may not be the best fit for every traveler. • Break-in time: About one week for my classic footbed pairs; one to two days for soft footbeds
• Walking comfort: Excellent for me once broken in
• Not ideal for: Heavy rain, muddy trails, water activities (unless you use the cork sealer) or very dressy occasions

Bottom line: Birkenstocks are some of my favorite travel sandals because the cork footbed becomes more comfortable with wear, they work with many vacation outfits, and they have lasted through years of trips. I would not bring a brand-new pair on vacation without breaking them in first.

Are Birkenstocks Good for Travel?

Birkenstock sandals are great for travel because they are comfortable and even better for walking long distances! Birkenstocks are one of my favorite shoes to pack for warm-weather trips, especially when I know we’ll be walking a lot. I’ve worn them for long sightseeing days, Disney trips, beach towns, cruise ports, and walkable city vacations where we easily logged over 10 miles each day.

I still like to rotate shoes on longer trips to avoid sore feet, but Birkenstocks are almost always the first sandals I add to my suitcase.

I will also say that I am pretty hard on shoes and don’t mind spending more for quality ones that will last for me, but I also love a good bargain when I can find one. The photo above is just a few of my favorite (and well-worn) Birkenstock sandals. 

They’re best for casual sightseeing, city walking, beach vacations, cruise days, and everyday summer travel. I would not choose the classic cork styles for heavy rain, muddy trails, or water activities, but for most warm-weather travel days, they are hard to beat. The waterproof EVA styles are perfect for pool days, beaches, or rainy weather. There is also a cork footbed waterproofer that can help with occasional puddles for the regular cork styles.

Birkenstock’s sales not through their officially authorized channels may not be covered by Birkenstock’s consumer warranty. I’ve always been happy with sandals from discounted retailers, but if warranty coverage matters to you, check Birkenstock’s official retailer information before buying.

How to Break In Birkenstocks Before a Trip

• Wear them indoors for 30 to 60 minutes.
• Progress to short errands. I would say it takes a few days for them to fully mold to my feet.
• Adjust the straps so the foot stays secure without being squeezed.
• Do one longer local walking day before traveling.
• Do not make the first full day of vacation their first all-day wear.

Birkenstock Soft Footbed vs. Classic Footbed: Which Is Better for Travel?

One of the biggest choices when buying Birkenstocks is whether to choose the classic footbed or the soft footbed. I have worn both, and while they share the same supportive shape, they feel noticeably different when they are new.

Birkenstock Classic Footbed

The classic Birkenstock footbed has the firm, contoured feel the brand is best known for. It includes a deep heel cup, raised toe bar, and defined arch support designed to support the natural shape of the foot.

When a classic footbed is brand new, it can feel quite firm. In my experience, it usually takes about a week of gradual wear before the cork begins to soften and mold to my feet.

Birkenstock Soft Footbed

The soft footbed has the same basic contoured shape as the classic version, but it includes an additional layer of cushioning beneath the suede lining. This makes it feel softer and more comfortable when first worn.

My soft footbed Birkenstocks required less break-in time than my classic pairs. They felt comfortable after only a few days of shorter wear, which may make them a good choice for someone purchasing their first pair or shopping shortly before a trip.

However, the soft footbed still feels supportive rather than plush like a heavily cushioned sneaker. It also may not develop the same deeply molded feel as quickly as the classic footbed because of the added cushioning layer.

Which Footbed Do I Prefer for Travel?

I personally prefer the classic footbed for most trips once it is completely broken in. The firm support works well for my feet during long sightseeing days, and the cork gradually becomes more comfortable and personalized with wear.

However, I would choose a soft footbed for someone who wants a more forgiving feel right away or does not have much time to break in a new pair before traveling.

Birkenstock vs. Chacos for trips?

I have a pair of Zvolv X2 Chaco Sandals (you can check them out on Amazon) and I love bringing them for when we will be going on nature trails. They feel more secure for outdoor adventures, and the adjustable straps help keep them snug when the terrain is uneven. However, for most travel walking I love my Birkenstock sandals and they get the most use on trips. So, if I had to choose only one for a walkable city trip, I’d choose Birkenstocks.

Which Birkenstock sandal style is my favorite?

• I normally wear a medium width women’s U.S. size 10 and usually choose a Birkenstock size 41 regular width.
• I like wearing all of the styles pictured (Arizona, Florida, Big Buckle, and Gizeh) and rotate them when traveling space allows.
• The Gizeh style sandals are definitely my favorites. They hug my feet in a way that feels secure without being bulky, and the classic cork footbed gives me the support I need for long walking days. I usually cannot wear regular thong-style flip-flops comfortably, but the Gizeh style has been completely different for me.
• My favorite pair is the Disney Mickey Sketch Gizeh sandals I found at a department store in Germany. They have walked through Europe, U.S. cities, tropical destinations, and plenty of vacation days where we did way more walking than planned. I hope they last forever! (you can sometimes find them at Ebay on the secondary market but they are expensive)

• For me, the Gizeh style is the best Birkenstock sandal for travel because it is supportive, easy to pack, casual but still cute, and comfortable enough for long sightseeing days.

Why I Keep Packing Birkenstocks for Summer Travel

There are a few reasons Birkenstocks keep earning space in my suitcase:

• They support my feet better than most flat sandals. The cork footbed feels firm at first, but once it molds to my feet, it gives me the kind of support I need for walking-heavy trips.
• They work with a lot of casual travel outfits. I can wear them with shorts, sundresses, casual skirts, travel pants, or beach outfits, which makes them easy to pack.
• They last for years. I am hard on shoes, but my Birkenstocks have held up through many trips. Birkenstock has been making shoes since the 1700’s!
• They come in different styles for different needs. I like classic cork styles for sightseeing, Big Buckle styles when I want something a little more polished, and EVA waterproof Birkenstocks for the beach or pool.
• They help me rotate shoes on longer trips. I still pack more than one pair of travel shoes when space allows, but Birkenstocks are usually one of the pairs I know I’ll actually wear.

Why are Birkenstock sandals so good for travel or everyday wear

• I mentioned earlier about how I sometimes have issues with Plantar Fasciitis. Well, John Davis of Runnersconnect.com has an article on the latest studies and shoe recommendations and says Birkenstocks are shown to be helpful because they offer rigid support and mold to your feet. This is one of the main reasons I think they are comfortable for walking long distances on vacation.
• Another reason they are great for summer travel is that they are sandals (of course!) and the cork footbed doesn’t cause my feet to sweat and become uncomfortable.
• Even Podiatrists such as River Podiatry have discussed the benefits discuss that wearing Birkenstocks offer benefits for healthy feet and comfort.

When is the best time to wear Birkenstock Sandals?

• I wear mine almost year-round, and yes, I have even worn them with socks on flights or chilly travel days. No regrets.
• The Big Buckle and Arizona style [Great prices on Amazon] They pair great with casual sundresses or skirts. They also have these Birks sandals with heels; Birkenstock Soley (great price on Amazon!)
• They are available in vegan leather styles too!
• If there is going to be miles of walking on a trip I make sure to bring at least one pair because Birkenstocks are great for walking!
• The EVA Arizona Birkenstock sandals (the all-silver ones in the photo above) are great to wear at the pool or on the beach. I don’t find that they mold to my feet like the cork footbed ones, but they are comfortable for beachwear or if you need something waterproof and stylish. Update: I just got a pair of the white waterproof Gizeh EVA Birkenstock sandals and I love them too!
• There are also Big Buckle EVA waterproof Birkenstock Sandals which are great!
• They are also not just for women! Most of the styles are available in men’s sizing and models as well.

⚠️ A Few Things to Know Before You Buy Birkenstocks

I love traveling with Birkenstocks, but they are not perfect for every situation. Here are a few things to know before you buy your first pair:

• Classic cork Birkenstocks are not ideal for rainy days or water activities unless you use cork sealer or choose the EVA waterproof styles.
• They usually need a break-in period, especially the classic footbed. (it’s worth it!)
• They run casual, so they may not work for every dressy dinner or resort outfit. Try the metallic styles or big buckle styles for a dressier look.
• They can be pricey, but my pairs have lasted for years.
• Your toes are exposed, which is not always ideal in crowds or on uneven streets.
• They use European sizing, so it’s important to check the size chart. I wear a U.S. 10 and usually wear a 41 in Birkenstocks.

That said, I still bring at least one pair on almost every warm-weather trip, and I’ve never regretted giving them suitcase space.

Where I Look for Birkenstock Deals

Because Birkenstocks can be an investment, I usually compare prices before buying. Sometimes I buy from an authorized retailer, especially if I want the warranty coverage. Other times, I bargain hunt if I find a great price and the return policy looks easy.

Here are a few places I personally compare when looking for Birkenstock sandals:

•  Amazon – Latest models + Prime shipping – Convenient for comparing prices and shipping speed, but Birkenstock states that Amazon is not an authorized sales channel, so warranty coverage may not apply.
•  T.J.Maxx – If you’re lucky, huge discounts! ✨Search “German Sandals” because you can’t search by brand there.

• 📌If you happen to visit Munich (or elsewhere in Europe) try a T.K.Maxx. Hopefully, you will find a bargain too!
• Bloomingdales – They have a really good selection of many styles and run sales.
• check new Birkenstock styles that are great for travel and on sale at the The Walking Company website or the main U.S. Birkenstock Website.
• Journey’s – They are an authorized Birkenstock store and have many of the new styles!
• Dick’s Sporting Goods – They are also an authorized Birkenstock store and run great sales!
• Of course. if the warranty is important to you check the Birkenstock U.S. Store locator to find authorized stores near you.

My personal approach: if I’m buying a full-price pair or a new style I want covered by warranty, I would start with Birkenstock or an authorized retailer. If I’m bargain hunting, I compare carefully, read the seller details, and make sure returns are easy if I have issues.
