Why an Adult Disney World Trip is a Magical Idea

Disney World is a magical place for families (and adults) to bond and have an amazing break from the norm.

A Disney World trip for adults (especially empty nesters) can be a magical idea! There is a unique blend of nostalgia, entertainment, relaxation, and bonding opportunities that appeal to a wide range of interests and tastes.

Dole Whip ice cream is not just for kids! We love them too!

Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida, is one of the most traveled-to destinations in the United States!

The guests that are visiting aren’t always with a family. We empty nesters love it too!

The first trip my husband and I took together without the kids was to Disney World! We had been going for years as a family and just wanted to take an anniversary trip with only us.

Unexpectedly, we found that it was a totally different experience as adults without having to plan for family activities.

Our trip was less stressful and we could do and see whatever we wanted!

We have been back many times since then as adults and absolutely love it.

It’s also a great experience visiting with our adult children who have now discovered the magic of an adult Disney trip.

We also have a guide with some free things to do in Orlando and compiled where you can find the best craft cocktails in Orlando!

Magic Kingdom

Magic Kingdom is often considered the most iconic of the Disney World parks.

The main attraction features the iconic Cinderella Castle and other classic attractions such as Pirates of the Caribbean and Space Mountain.

Adults will love the nostalgic charm of the park, as well as a variety of fun rides.

It is the most crowded park in our experience lately so we usually save this one for last.

Epcot

Epcot is a park that combines technology, innovation, and cultural immersion.

Adults will love exploring the different pavilions in the World Showcase, sampling cuisine from around the world.

There are also exciting rides such as Test Track, Trop (in April) and Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind.

Epcot is also home to popular seasonal festivals, including the International Food & Wine Festival, the International Flower & Garden Festival, and International Festival of the Arts.

We love visiting during any of the festivals. I especially love the flowers and topiaries during the Flower and Garden Festival!

Hollywood Studios

Hollywood Studios is the perfect park for movie buffs and thrill-seekers alike.

With attractions such as the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Rock’  n’ Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith, and the new Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge area, there are plenty of adventures to be had.

Adults will also love the food and drink options here, from its Tap House to its themed dining experiences.

Animal Kingdom

Animal Kingdom is a park that combines animal encounters with exciting rides and immersive experiences.

Adults will love riding through the park’s vast safari area on Kilimanjaro Safaris. You might be able to see exotic animals such as giraffes, lions, and elephants.

The park is also home to thrilling attractions such as Expedition Everest and Avatar Flight of Passage, as well as the popular live shows, Festival of the Lion King and Feathered Friends in Flight!

This park is magical at sunset! The last time we rode Expedition Everest the sun was just going down beyond the city. It’s a beautiful memory that I cherish.

The Rides Aren’t Just for Kids

Disney World has a variety of rides and attractions that appeal to adults.

The experience includes thrilling rides, immersive experiences, and classic attractions.

Check out some of the best rides at Disney for adults to incorporate into your trip plans!

Soarin’ Around the World – [Epcot]

This simulated hang-gliding experience takes you on a breathtaking journey over some of the world’s most iconic landmarks and natural wonders.

It is a must-do for us! I love the scents in the new edition of the ride that correspond to the movie!

Expedition Everest – [Animal Kingdom]

This high-speed roller coaster takes you on a thrilling adventure through the Himalayas. You’ll even see the infamous Yeti! It is complete with hairpin turns and a backward plunge.

Ride this at sunset for an amazing view!

tiki room disney world
We can visit the Enchanted Tiki Room as much as we want on our adult Disney trip! (okay, I love it more than my husband)

Enchanted Tiki Room – [Magic Kingdom]

This is my must-do because when we went on family trips everyone would roll their eyes when I wanted to do this.

I love the birds singing and the whole tropical feel (and air conditioning)! I even designed my patio at home to resemble parts of this tiki paradise.

Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind – [Epcot]

This newer coaster is a thrilling and smooth indoor coaster. You are on a mission to save the galaxy, with some cool music and twists and turns along the way.

We ride this several times during every trip!

It is what a coaster should be and has great music!

Tip: With just 2 adults it is worth it to purchase a lightning lane for this ride so you can ride it more than once without a wait!

The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror – [Hollywood Studios]

This drop ride takes you on a spooky experience through the haunted Hollywood Tower Hotel. The adventure culminates in a thrilling drop sequence that will leave you screaming.

The theming on this ride is great and the cast members stay in character which adds to the experience!

Test Track – [Epcot]

This high-speed ride allows you to design and test your own virtual concept car. It then takes you on a thrilling test track that reaches speeds of up to 65 mph.

Avatar Flight of Passage – [Animal Kingdom]

This immersive ride takes you on a voyage through the world of Pandora.

It is complete with breathtaking visuals and a thrilling flight on the back of a Banshee.

It really feels like you are sitting on a Banshee (it kind of feels like it is breathing) on this ride!

Rock’  n’ Roller Coaster – [Hollywood Studios]

This high-speed roller coaster takes you on an exhilarating ride through the streets of Los Angeles in a “stretch limo”.

It is complete with loops and inversions set to the music of Aerosmith.

Our first must-do of the trip usually!

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance – [Hollywood Studios]

This unique experience immerses you in the Star Wars Universe. You are sent on a thrilling multi-part mission and battle with the First Order.

My husband loves this ride more than I do. He insists it is the ultimate Star Wars experience so I’m on board with recommending it.

Pirates of the Caribbean – [Magic Kingdom]

This classic boat ride takes you on a journey through a pirate’s life. It is complete with swashbuckling adventure and plenty of hijinks.

It’s an iconic and nostalgic ride for us because our boys had to do it on every trip numerous times and now we just go for the memories.

Kilimanjaro Safaris – [Animal Kingdom]

This safari ride takes you on an outing through the African savanna. It allows you to see exotic animals such as elephants, lions, and giraffes in replications of their natural habitats.

Disney for adult trips is a magical idea!
Disney’s Epcot has many areas that cater to a magical adult trip!

Disney has several areas that cater to adults

Disney has designed specific areas and experiences with adults in mind. A great example is Epcot’s World Showcase, where visitors can sample food and beverages from around the world.

Some others are; Disney’s BoardWalk and Disney Springs which offers nightlife, shopping, and dining options.

There are also numerous upscale craft cocktail bars and cuisine that caters to an adult palate.

For more food options in the area check out our Best Orlando Restaurants for Foodies guide!

Awesome Cocktails and Drinks for an Adult Disney Trip

Disney World delivers a variety of delicious and creative drinks, from signature cocktails to mocktails and everything in between.

We’re recommending some of the best places to check out during your trip!

[See our other recommendations for the best craft cocktails in Orlando to try too]

Choza de Margarita – Epcot

As you enter the World Showcase’s Mexico Pavilion, you will see this popular margarita stand, which offers a variety of signature and frozen margaritas, as well as beer and tasty snacks like tacos and empanadas.

Baseline Tap House – Hollywood Studios

This craft beer bar is a great spot to grab a drink and relax during your day at the park.

The menu features an array of local and regional beers, as well as a few tasty snacks like Bavarian pretzels and charcuterie plates

Nomad Lounge – Animal Kingdom

This tranquil lounge is a gem in the heart of Animal Kingdom.

It is one of our favorites and you can grab a table outside on the porch area to get drinks and small bites.

The menu features an array of unique cocktails, such as the Hightower Rocks (a tequila-based cocktail with watermelon) and the Lamu Libation (a rum-based cocktail with guava puree).

Oga’s Cantina – Hollywood Studios

This place is a ‘local watering hole’ located in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge. It is one of my husband’s favorites.

My only hesitation is that you are usually (not always) standing for the experience. So, it may be better for drinks than bites even though we do get a snack too.

Try out some of its themed galactic beverages, which they have available with or without alcohol.

There is also beer and wine on tap and a couple of snack options.

Rose & Crown Pub – Epcot

Over at the United Kingdom Pavilion, you can stop into an authentically-themed British pub.

They serve up signature cocktails, wine, pub blends by the pint, and a selection of flights to sample.

The restaurant here is one of our faves too!

The Hollywood Brown Derby Lounge – Hollywood Studios

This stylish lounge is located outside the Hollywood Brown Derby restaurant and features a menu of classic cocktails.

Try a Hollywood Manhattan or an Old Fashioned while snacking on one of the lounge’s charcuterie boards.

Amazing Dining Experiences Adults Love at Disney World

When it comes to dining experiences, Disney World really shines!

The resort offers a wide range magical of dining experiences, from quick-service options to fine-dining restaurants.

Adults will love the variety of options available within the parks, from international cuisine to upscale options and unique experiences.

Tiffins Restaurant – Animal Kingdom

This signature restaurant is inspired by the travels of the Imagineers who created the park.

The menu features creative dishes from around the world, and the ambiance is upscale and refined.

Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant – Hollywood Studios

Feel a wave of nostalgia at this restaurant, which has a fun and unique setting.

Guests sit in vintage cars and watch classic sci-fi movie clips while enjoying American dishes like burgers, sandwiches, and sundaes.

This was a must-do on family trips and we continue the tradition with just adults when we have a chance!

Jungle Navigation Co. Skipper Canteen – Magic Kingdom

This is a fun table-service restaurant in Adventureland, themed after the Jungle Cruise attraction.

It offers a unique menu inspired by the flavors of Asia, South America, and Africa. The food is served by servers dressed as Jungle Cruise riverboat pilots.

Chefs de France – Epcot

This elegant French restaurant in the France Pavilion offers classic French cuisine with a modern twist.

The menu includes dishes like escargots, an iconic ratatouille, and tasty crème brûlée.

Adults will love the relaxing break you get eating here. It’s nice to look out over the park passers-by while you sip French wine.

Liberty Tree Tavern – Magic Kingdom

This is a colonial-style restaurant located in Liberty Square, and it serves traditional American comfort food.

Order dishes such as salad, roast turkey, pot roast, pork, plant-based meatloaf, and dessert options served in an all-you-care-to-enjoy style.

It’s a great choice for a hearty meal in a cozy and quirky setting perfect for adults.

Yak & Yeti Restaurant – Animal Kingdom

This Asian-inspired restaurant not far from Expedition Everest is known for its delicious food and Nepalese-style decor.

Guests can dine in a beautifully decorated dining room or on the outdoor patio with views of the park.

This is another one that was a family favorite that we have continued into our adult trips.

We love the food there and can usually fill up with a couple of shared appetizers and cocktails.

Be Our Guest has lovely desserts for adults and was our first sans kids anniversary lunch spot!

Be Our Guest Restaurant – Magic Kingdom

This is a highly popular restaurant located inside the Beast’s castle in Fantasyland [Magic Kingdom].

We had our anniversary lunch here and always make a point to book it for lunch on our adult trips.

I like it better for lunch or breakfast than dinner, but the theming is amazing.

Spice Road Table – Epcot

This Mediterranean-inspired restaurant in the Morocco Pavilion offers a selection of small plates and entrees. They also have a variety of cocktails and wines.

It’s a great spot to relax and enjoy the magical views of the World Showcase lagoon.

Magical bar at The Edison Disney Springs
Steampunk enthusiasts will love the bar at The Edison in Disney Springs!

Disney Springs is on our list even when the rest of Disney Parks aren’t

Disney Springs is an amazing (and one of the free Orlando activities!) area that we visit on adult trips!

We make time to go here even when we are visiting Universal Studios or other Orlando attractions in the area.

There are so many great options for cocktails and food here. In addition, there is also bowling, live music, and movies and we just love it.

The shopping is also great with some nice big name stores such as, Zara, Tommy Bahama, and Uniqlo.

Disney offers specialty festivals throughout the year that is perfect for adult trips!

Throughout the year, Disney World hosts numerous special events and festivals. Some examples are Epcot’s International Food & Wine Festival or the International Flower & Garden Festival, which offer unique experiences for adults to enjoy.

Another magical festival that is perfect for adult trips is Epcot’s International Festival of the Arts. It is full of amazing artists and food!

It focuses on the creation of art and cuisine with different presentations.

A couple of artists that I used to work with present during this festival and absolutely love the experience.

Relaxation, Escapism, Bonding, and Personal Growth

Can a magical adult Disney World trip help in these areas?

Absolutely! There are various ways for adults to relax and unwind.

Adults can take advantage of spas, pools, and lounges found at many of the Disney resort hotels.

A Disney World trip allows adults to escape the stresses and responsibilities of daily life and indulge in a world of fantasy, imagination, and adventure.

There are countless opportunities for adults to bond and create lasting memories together.

It’s not just empty nesters and couples! Huge groups of friends or family can meet up here from across the world!

Visiting Disney World can inspire creativity, curiosity, and a sense of wonder, which can lead to personal growth and development for adults.

It is also great exercise!

I know this sounds hokey, but it has been our experience that the ‘not in the real world’ part of this is what makes it a perfect break from the norm.

I get that Disney is a “created” or simulated bubble, but that is the point!
