Best Day Trips from South Beach Miami

key largo best south beach miami day trip sunset view from pier

South Beach has enough to keep you busy for a full weekend, but it also makes a great base if you want to explore more of the Miami area. If you have an extra day, these are some of the best day trips from South Beach that add a totally different feel to your trip.

Little Havana

Little Havana is one of our favorite easy day trips from South Beach because it gives you a completely different side of Miami without needing to go far. Spend a few hours walking Calle Ocho, trying Cuban coffee, listening to live music, seeing the murals, and watching the domino games at Domino Park. It is colorful, lively, and such a fun foodie stop if you want a break from the beach scene.

Best for: Cuban food, culture, street art, music, and first-time Miami visitors.
Easy trip tip: A guided food and cultural walking tour is a great way to experience Little Havana without missing the best stops.

Wynwood Walls and the Wynwood Arts District

If you love colorful murals, photos, galleries, and creative neighborhoods, Wynwood is an easy add-on from South Beach. Wynwood Walls is the main draw, but the whole area is filled with street art, restaurants, breweries, and fun places to wander. This is a great afternoon stop before dinner or a night out in Miami.

Best for: Art lovers, photos, murals, breweries, and creative energy.
Easy trip tip: Go earlier in the day for better photos with fewer crowds.

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens

Vizcaya is one of the most beautiful places to visit near South Beach if you love historic homes, gardens, architecture, and Biscayne Bay views. It feels completely different from Ocean Drive and makes a peaceful half-day trip when you want a slower, more elegant Miami experience.

Best for: Architecture, gardens, history, photography, and romantic Miami vibes.
Easy trip tip: Pair Vizcaya with Coconut Grove for lunch or coffee afterward.

Vizcaya is located at 3251 South Miami Avenue and is generally open Wednesday through Monday, with Tuesdays closed.

Everglades National Park / Shark Valley

For a nature-focused day trip, head west to Shark Valley in Everglades National Park. This is one of the most accessible ways to experience the Everglades from Miami, with wildlife viewing, a 15-mile loop, tram tours, biking, and an observation tower. It is a totally different experience from South Beach and a great choice if you want to see Florida’s wild side.

Best for: Nature, wildlife, alligators, birds, biking, and a break from the city.
Easy trip tip: Go early, bring water, and check the official park information before you head out.

Powered by GetYourGuide

Key West or the Florida Keys

The Florida Keys are technically possible as a very long day trip from South Beach, but we think they are much better as an overnight or multi-day add-on. If you have extra time, South Beach can be a great starting point for a Florida Keys road trip, especially if you want to continue on to Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, or Key West. We usually spend a couple of days in South Beach and rent a car, then continue on through the Keys for the rest of the trip.

📌See our Complete Key West Trip Guide and our One Day Key West Itinerary to help you plan!

Best for: Road trips, turquoise water, sunsets, seafood, snorkeling, and a longer Florida vacation.
Easy trip tip: If you only have one extra day, choose Key Largo or Islamorada. Save Key West for at least one overnight if you can.

Getting Around South Beach Without a Car

One of the best things about South Beach is that you do not need a car for most of the main sights. The neighborhood is very walkable, especially if you are staying near Ocean Drive, Collins Avenue, Washington Avenue, or Lincoln Road.

We usually prefer walking in South Beach because there is always something fun to see, from Art Deco buildings and neon signs to beach views and quaint outdoor cafés. The Miami Beach Boardwalk is also great for walking, jogging, or biking along the ocean.

For places farther away, like Little Havana, Wynwood, Vizcaya, or the airport, rideshare is usually the easiest option. If you are renting a car for a longer Florida road trip, check whether your hotel charges for parking because South Beach parking can add up quickly.

Quick tip: If your hotel offers free bikes, use them for the boardwalk or short rides around the neighborhood.
