Hotel Edison NYC Review: Historic Art Deco Hotel Near Broadway

We recently stayed at Hotel Edison in New York City, and it turned out to be one of those classic NYC hotel experiences that felt fun, convenient, historic, and surprisingly spacious for our group of three. We break down everything we loved in our hotel review below.

Located right in the Theater District, Hotel Edison is only about a block from Times Square and close to the famous red steps, Broadway theaters, restaurants, and some of the city’s most iconic sights. For this trip, location mattered because we were seeing a Broadway show (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) and wanted somewhere easy, walkable, and safe-feeling at night.

And honestly? Hotel Edison checked those boxes for us.

The area around Times Square is definitely busy and chaotic, so this is not the quiet boutique-hotel type of NYC stay. But for a Broadway-focused trip, especially with three people, we loved how easy it was to walk almost everywhere. We only used a ride share when we went to Chelsea Market and the High Line (it was snowing).

Hotel Edison is also more than just a convenient Midtown hotel. It is a historic Art Deco property that opened in 1931, and according to the hotel’s official history, Thomas Edison turned on the marquee lights when it debuted in New York’s Theater District. The hotel describes itself as the first Art Deco hotel in the Theater District, and its interiors and public spaces have appeared in movies and shows including The Godfather, Seinfeld, Sex and the City, and Birdman.

Did we love Hotel Edison?

Yes, we really did enjoy our stay at Hotel Edison.

It is not the place I would recommend if you want a peaceful, tucked-away hotel far from the crowds. But if you want a historic New York City hotel near Times Square, Broadway theaters, great on-site dining, and an easy walking location, Hotel Edison is a great option.

We loved the colorful Art Deco lobby and murals, the historic feel, the convenience, the restaurants, the live jazz at The Rum House, and the fact that our room upgrade gave the three of us plenty of space.

The biggest highlights for us were:

• The amazing Theater District location
• The 2-bedroom suite upgrade
• The Art Deco lobby and murals
• The secure elevator access
• The on-site restaurants and bars
• Nightly drinks and live jazz at The Rum House
• Easy walking access to Broadway, Times Square, Rockefeller Center, Fifth Avenue, and other Midtown sights

What we didn’t love:

The only real downsides were that the area is crowded, the lobby can feel hectic, and the bathroom in our suite was pretty small for a 2-bedroom setup. But overall, we would definitely stay at Hotel Edison again and highly recommend it if you are booking a NYC trip.

Quick Verdict: Is Hotel Edison NYC Worth It?

Yes, Hotel Edison is totally worth a stay if you want a historic, walkable hotel near Times Square, Hell’s Kitchen, Broadway theaters, and Midtown attractions. We would stay here again, especially for a Broadway-focused trip or a first-time NYC visit where location matters.

Short history of Hotel Edison in New York City

One thing that makes Hotel Edison special is its history.

The hotel opened in 1931 during the Art Deco era and has long been tied to the energy of New York’s Theater District. According to Hotel Edison’s official history, Thomas Edison helped mark the hotel’s opening by turning on the marquee lights, and the hotel has remained connected to Broadway, celebrities, performers, and old New York glamour ever since. 

The building still has that vintage New York feeling, especially in the lobby and public spaces. You can see the Art Deco influence in the murals, patterns, lighting, and design details. It feels like one of those classic Midtown hotels that has watched decades of theatergoers, performers, tourists, and New Yorkers pass through its doors. I loved looking around at all of the Art Deco motifs within the design.

Hotel Edison is also home to the Edison Ballroom, Bond 45, Friedman’s, and The Rum House, which adds even more personality to the property. We were able to try The Rum House (our favorite!) and Bond 45, but missed Friedman’s this trip (although it had a line every night).

Hotel Edison location: close to Times Square and Broadway

The location was one of the biggest reasons we chose Hotel Edison.

The hotel is at 228 West 47th Street, right in the Theater District and about a block from Times Square. You are close to the Broadway theaters, the Times Square red steps, restaurants, subway access, and lots of Midtown attractions.

For our trip, it felt incredibly convenient. We had no trouble walking from the hotel, and because our Broadway show (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child) at the Lyric Theater was nearby, it felt like a safe and easy option after dark.

From Hotel Edison, we were able to walk to many places without needing a car. We only used a rideshare when we went over to Chelsea Market and the High Line, mostly because it was farther west, snowing, and easier for that part of the day.

If you are planning your first NYC trip, staying near Times Square can be a lot. It is bright, busy, loud, and crowded. But it is also very convenient, especially if you are focusing on Broadway, Midtown landmarks, and classic first-time New York experiences.

• Broadway Theaters – about 0.1 to 0.5 mile, depending on the theater
• Rockefeller Center & FAO Schwarz – about 0.7 mile / around a 10- to 15-minute walk
• Radio City Music Hall – about 0.4 mile
• Central Park – about 2 miles to the main park area / closer to just over 1 mile to the southern edge
• American Museum of Natural History – about 2 miles
• The Museum of Modern Art, MoMA – about 0.8 to 1 mile
• Bryant Park and the New York Public Library – about 0.7 to 1 mile
• The Original Soup Kitchen / Original SoupMan – about 0.5 mile
• Grand Central Terminal & Summit One Observatory – about 1 mile
• Chelsea Market and the High Line – about 2 miles

First impressions: Hotel Edison lobby and check-in experience

Our first impression of Hotel Edison was that it had a fun, colorful, historic feel, but the lobby was crowded.

We loved the murals and Art Deco designs in the lobby. It felt classic and energetic, which is exactly what you expect from a Times Square hotel.

That said, our check-in experience was a little chaotic because we arrived during Fashion Week, and there was a fashion show happening just off the lobby when we got there. So yes, the lobby was busy. Thankfully, the front desk staff handled everything efficiently, and we were checked in without any real issues.

Even better, they upgraded us from a junior suite to a 2-bedroom suite, which was such a nice surprise since there were three of us traveling together.

Before booking, I had joined the hotel’s loyalty program directly through the hotel website and booked with a discount (257.00/night). I’m not sure if that had anything to do with the upgrade, but either way, we were so very thankful for it.

The lobby area also has a gift shop and access from the hallways off the lobby to two of the restaurants on site. There is also a back entrance to The Rum House, which became one of our favorite parts of the stay.

Another thing we appreciated was that security checked room keys before guests could access the elevator area. In such a busy part of the city, that extra layer of security made the hotel feel more comfortable.

Our Room: 2-bedroom suite at Hotel Edison

Our suite worked really well for three people.

The first bedroom had two queen beds, a table and chairs, and a mini fridge. The second bedroom had a king bed, a desk, and a chair. Both bedrooms also had huge walk-in closets, which was a nice surprise for a New York City hotel.

The beds were comfortable, and we loved having the extra space. NYC hotel rooms can be tiny, so having two separate bedrooms made the stay feel much more relaxed.

The one thing that was a little tight was the bathroom. Both bedrooms shared one bathroom, and it was small. It was fine for our stay, but with three people getting ready, it did require a little coordination.

Still, the layout was great overall. We had enough room to spread out, store luggage, sit down, and relax between sightseeing, meals, and our Broadway plans.

Our view looked across toward the Marriott Marquis across the street. It was not a sweeping skyline view, but if we looked down, we could see the red steps of Times Square, which was a fun little NYC moment.

What we loved about the room

The biggest room highlights for us were the space, the comfortable beds, and the walk-in closets.

The suite did not feel overly fancy or ultra-modern, but it felt comfortable, well-appointed, and practical. For a historic Times Square hotel, that was exactly what we needed.

We especially appreciated:

• Two separate sleeping areas
• Two queen beds plus one king bed
• Comfortable beds
• A mini fridge
• A desk and chair
• A table and chairs
• Huge walk-in closets in both rooms
• Enough space for three people to feel comfortable

This room setup would be a great option for a family, a girls’ trip, a Broadway weekend, or anyone traveling with friends who wants more room and privacy than a standard Midtown hotel room.

Restaurants and bars at Hotel Edison

One of the best parts of staying at Hotel Edison is that you have several great dining and cocktail options right on site.

The hotel has three main options: Bond 45, Friedman’s, and The Rum House. Bond 45 is an impressive Italian restaurant with all-day breakfast, house-made pasta, seafood, thin-crust pizza, and a vegetable antipasto bar. Friedman’s serves American comfort food and is known for gluten-free cuisine. The Rum House is an intimate space for cocktails, spirits, and live jazz. 

We loved having these options connected to the hotel, especially after long days of walking around the city. We got to eat breakfast and dinner at Bond 45 which was great and enjoyed cocktails each night at Rum House, but did not get to try Friedman’s this trip.

Bond 45

Bond 45 is where we had breakfast during our stay.

Hotel Edison’s direct-booking benefits currently list daily grab-and-go breakfast for two as one of the perks, along with Wi-Fi, late checkout, neighborhood walking tours, and Triumph Wine Hours. 

During our stay, breakfast was at Bond 45, and there was a grab-and-go option included. You could also choose a sit-down breakfast for a small extra fee.

We did the full sit-down breakfast at Bond 45 most days, and it was great. The food was much better than the grab-and-go option, and it made for a nice start before heading out into the city.

The one day we did the takeaway breakfast, we thought it was mediocre. It was convenient, but it was not nearly as enjoyable as sitting down for breakfast. If you have time, I would definitely choose the sit-down option.

Friedman’s

Friedman’s is another on-site restaurant at Hotel Edison, located right off the lobby. It serves comforting American fare with gluten-free options, and dinner can include singing servers who are Broadway performers. 

We didn’t get to try Friedman’s this trip, but judging from the long lines each time we passed many people love it! The inside has a retro decor feel and it’s on our list for next trip.

The Rum House

The Rum House was our favorite.

Every night, we ended our day there, and it became one of the highlights of the trip. The drinks were amazing, the atmosphere was cozy and fun, and the live jazz made it feel like such a classic New York nightcap spot.

One night, we also had small plates there, which worked perfectly after a busy day when we did not want a full dinner. The Rum House felt like a hidden little escape from the Times Square chaos outside.

The hotel describes The Rum House as one of the best cocktail bars in New York City, with an expansive spirit and cocktail selection and live jazz nightly. We wholeheartedly agree!

For us, it was the perfect place to unwind after Broadway, sightseeing, and all the city walking.

Tip: Book a table for Rum House before you go because it is small and fills up. The first night we lucked out, but we booked the next 2 nights for a table before.

Breakfast at Hotel Edison: grab-and-go vs. sit-down

Breakfast was included during our stay through Bond 45, with the option to do free grab-and-go or pay a small extra fee ($6.50) for a sit-down breakfast.

We tried both, and the sit-down breakfast was the clear winner. The french toast was amazing and the rest of the team loved the 2-egg plate.

The full breakfasts at Bond 45 were great and felt like a more enjoyable way to start the day. The grab-and-go breakfast was convenient, but we thought it was just okay. The grab and go area was also crowded and we had trouble finding a table to sit down and enjoy our food.

If you are booking Hotel Edison and breakfast is included, I would plan to do the sit-down breakfast at least once if your schedule allows. It felt more relaxed, and the food was much better than the takeaway option.

What we didn’t love about Hotel Edison

We really enjoyed Hotel Edison, but there are a few things to know before booking.

First, the Times Square area is crowded and chaotic. That is not really the hotel’s fault, but it is part of the experience. If you want a quiet NYC neighborhood, this may not be the best fit.

Second, the lobby can get very busy. We happened to arrive during Fashion Week with a fashion show going on, so our arrival was extra hectic. The staff was efficient, but it was definitely not a calm check-in scene.

Third, the bathroom in our 2-bedroom suite was small. The suite itself had great space, but since both bedrooms shared one small bathroom, it could feel tight for three people.

Finally, the grab-and-go breakfast was not our favorite. It was fine in a pinch, but the sit-down breakfast at Bond 45 ($6.50 extra) was much better.

None of these would stop us from staying again, but they are worth knowing ahead of time.

Who should stay at Hotel Edison?

Hotel Edison is a great choice if you want a historic hotel in a super convenient Theater District location.

I think it is especially good for:

• Broadway trips
• First-time NYC visitors who want to stay near Times Square
• Friends’ trips or girls’ trips
• Families who need more room
• Travelers who like historic hotels
• Anyone who wants on-site restaurants and bars
• Visitors who want to walk to Midtown attractions

It may not be the best fit if you want a quiet luxury hotel, a residential neighborhood feel, or a peaceful lobby experience. This is Times Square, so expect energy, crowds, and movement.

But for our Harry Potter and the Cursed Child on Broadway trip, that location was exactly what we needed.

Check-out and getting to JFK Airport

Check-out was easy, and the doorman helped us get a taxi to JFK when our trip was over. It was much less than a ride share would’ve cost us.

That was another small but helpful part of the stay. In a busy area like Times Square, it was nice to have someone help with transportation instead of trying to figure it out on the curb with luggage.

Final thoughts: Would we stay at Hotel Edison again?

Yes, we would definitely stay at Hotel Edison again.

We loved the location, the history, the Art Deco design, the security near the elevators, the on-site restaurants, and especially The Rum House. Our upgraded 2-bedroom suite made the stay even better because we had so much more room than we expected.

It is a busy, energetic hotel in a very crowded part of New York City, so you do need to be prepared for that. But if your trip is centered around Broadway, Times Square, sightseeing, and walkability, Hotel Edison is a great choice.

For us, it felt safe, convenient, comfortable, and fun. And ending each night with live jazz and cocktails at The Rum House made the stay feel even more memorable. Even if we are not staying at Hotel Edison on a future trip we will make time to visit The Rum House!

We would absolutely recommend Hotel Edison for a Broadway weekend or a classic Midtown NYC getaway.
