Old San Juan (Viejo San Juan) is the historic colonial district of San Juan, Puerto Rico, located on a small peninsula connected to the main island by bridges. It was founded in 1521, it is one of the oldest European-established cities in the Americas and a UNESCO-recognized historic district known for Spanish forts, cobblestone streets, and pastel colonial architecture.
Why Old San Juan Is Such a Charming trip destination
The first time we visited Old San Juan, we immediately knew there was something special about it. The pastel-colored colonial buildings, blue cobblestone streets, ocean breezes in centuries-old forts, and lively plazas filled with music and laughter created a feeling that was both historic and joyful at the same time. Our first visit was a pre-cruise stay for a couple of days. Fast-forward a few years and our son married into a wonderful Puerto Rican family who live here so our visits increased and our love for this special island grew even more!
Old San Juan never loses its charm. Every visit feels like stepping into a living postcard where history, culture, and Caribbean vibes blend effortlessly. You can spend the morning exploring Spanish forts, the afternoon sipping the best Puerto Rican coffee in a secluded café, and the evening watching the sunset from the old city walls.

Where Is Old San Juan & How Do You Get There?
If you’re wondering how to get to Old San Juan, you’re not alone, but the good news is it’s one of the easiest Caribbean destinations for U.S. travelers to reach.
✈️ Fly to San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU)
Old San Juan is about 15–20 minutes from Luis Muñoz Marín International Airport.
Because Puerto Rico is a U.S. territory:

Old San Juan hotels tend to be boutique-style historic properties, while nearby Condado offers beachfront resorts within easy reach of the old city. We definitely recommend staying within these 2 areas versus La Perla because of the walkability and proximity of restaurants and bars.
We personally love splitting time between the historic district and the beach at Condado or Isla Verde for the best of both worlds.

These are the places we’ve stayed at the most and love or recommend most based on location, comfort, and experience. There are many other great Old San Juan options, but these are our go-to hotels when we visit.
La Concha Renaissance Resort (Condado)
Best for: beach lovers & resort comfort. Great use of Marriott/Bonvoy points!
On our last trip we stayed three nights on Marriott points at La Concha and loved being directly on the beach while still just a short walk or Uber ride to Old San Juan. The ocean views, pools, and modern rooms make it a great contrast to the historic district. It’s also a departure point for some excursions like bioluminescent bay tours.

Historic Full Moon at Old San Juan Apartment(Calle del Santo Cristo)
Best for: immersive historic stay with local feel. Great for larger groups too!
We spent two nights in a three-level rental, Full Moon at Old San Juan, right in the heart of Old San Juan overlooking Calle del Santo Cristo. The private roof deck and balcony views of the colorful streets were unforgettable. It was lively (and yes, a bit loud), but we absolutely loved feeling part of the historic city’s rhythm. The entry is also through a pizza shop so we would order pizza and watch the sunsets from our roof deck. It was perfection!
Caribe Hilton Hotel Condado
Best for: Private beach, easy walking to Old San Juan, great for Hilton points.
We love this Hilton because it is so close to the center of Old San Juan, but beachfront! When we have Hilton points we always stay here. The rooms are great and the grounds/beach are so nice.
Hotel El Convento
Best for: historic luxury, great for first timers & prime location in Old San Juan
Hotel El Convento is a true Old San Juan piece of history. It’s a beautifully restored 17th-century Carmelite convent with elegant rooms, a peaceful courtyard, and an awesome rooftop terrace with views over the historic district and San Juan Bay. La Terraza de San Juan boutique hotel
Best for: boutique vibe & rooftop views
La Terraza de San Juan is a charming boutique hotel tucked into the heart of San Juan’s historic area and offers a stylish yet relaxed stay within walking distance of the forts, plazas, and great nearby restaurants. Palacio Provincial San Juan (Hilton Curio)
Best for: historic charm with modern comfort and great use of Hilton Points!
Palacio Provincial blends classic colonial with contemporary style and it’s right in Old San Juan’s core. Part of Hilton’s Curio Collection, this hotel is set in a beautiful historic building. The rooms have high ceilings, and there’s a rooftop pool and terrace with cathedral views, and a welcoming bar that’s ideal for sunset rosé. Castillo San Felipe del Morro
The dramatic coastal fortress of Castillo San Filipe del Morro is Old San Juan’s most famous landmark. Walking the grassy fields and ramparts overlooking the Atlantic is unforgettable.
Paseo de la Princesa & Raíces Fountain
This scenic waterfront promenade of Paseo de la Princesa leads from the city gate to the iconic Raices fountain and harbor views and it’s perfect at sunset.
Calle de la Fortaleza Umbrella Street
Calle de la Fortaleza is one of the most photographed streets in Puerto Rico, with colorful umbrellas and pastel colonial architecture. The umbrellas change often so it’s always a nice surprise to see which ones are up.
Plaza de Armas & Living Statues
The central square of Old San Juan near City Hall often features performers dressed as bronze statues who surprised us on our first visit. It’s fun and interactive. Callejón del Gato (Cat Street)
A whimsical street and alley dedicated to Old San Juan’s famous cats, filled with murals, sculptures, and of course lots of kitties. It’s referred to as Cat Plaza or the area near Parque de los Gatos walking from Paseo del Morro.
Puerto Rican Flag Doors & Street Art
Colorful doors painted with the Puerto Rican flag are scattered throughout the historic district: perfect photo spots. The above one is located at 51 Calle San José. There are colorful murals and art scattered throughout Old San Juan if you wander around.
Explore Castillo San Cristóbal
Castillo San Cristóbal is the massive sister fortress to El Morro and an essential stop for understanding Old San Juan’s history. Exploring the fort feels like stepping into a labyrinth with tunnels, lookout towers, great photo angles, and amazing harbor views from the city walls. It’s also really close to the cruise port and Plaza Colón.
La Fortaleza Totem (El Totem Telúrico)
In the Plaza del Quinto Centenario (some people also call it “totem square” Plaza del Tótem) just across from El Morro is this amazing 40 ft. totem designed by artist Jaime Suárez to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the discovery of the Americas.
Parque de las Palomas (Pigeon Park)
Parque de las Palomas has a quaint park area where you can buy dried corn to feed the resident pigeons and see amazing views of San Juan Bay.
El Malecón & City Walls
Walking along the old defensive walls offers sweeping Atlantic views and a sense of the city’s 500-year history.
Condado Beach (La Concha Area)
When you want a beach break, Condado’s golden sand and turquoise water are just minutes away. You can even walk from Old San Juan just over the bridge and past Caribe Hilton there’s another smaller bridge where they rent snorkel equipment and there’s a beach or further down is more beaches and resorts.
Bioluminescent Bay Kayaking (Fajardo Day Trip)
We did an unforgettable nighttime kayak tour in the glowing bioluminescent waters near Fajardo at Grande Bay. While Vieques has the brightest bay, Fajardo is much easier to reach from San Juan without needing a ferry, making it ideal for shorter trips. Our tour picked us up from our hotel in Old San Juan and we loved the whole experience. It is best on new moon nights, but they gave us tarps to cover with so we could see the glowing underwater and block the light above (our tour is the one below). There is also a small group bio kayak tour with rum tasting that we’ll try next time.

- A visit to lesser-seen unique places like this day trip to Rincon, Isabela, Ponce, Guavate, and Caguas is a must for a day of adventure!
- To properly do the bioluminescent bay at Vieques you really need 2 days to take the ferry from Ceiba to Vieques early in the morning and book a hotel then come back the next day because the bay bioluminescence can only be seen at night and the ferry doesn’t run that late. It is totally worth it if you have time though!

Our Favorite Old San Juan Restaurants
Café Manolín – 251 Calle San Justo, Old San Juan
Our favorite shrimp mofongo and pastalón in Old San Juan! It’s classic Puerto Rican comfort food with a diner-style vibe. They get really crowded so we usually try to go early. Also, the pastalón is only offered on certain days as a special so check the board outside.
Café 4 Estaciones – 151 Calle de San Francisco Plaza de Armas, Old San Juan
Excellent local Puerto Rican coffee, breakfast, lunch, sweets. Just across from the “living statues” fountain near Plaza de Armas. Outdoor garden seating area.
La Masa Pizzería Conceptual – 51 Calle Del Santo Cristo, Old San Juan
Great casual pizza and bar in the historic district where we had our apartment rental above. It was a nice end of day treat after sightseeing in Old San Juan. They also have great mojitos. You can do take-away or dine in the courtyard or inside.
Barrachina Restaurant – 104 Fortaleza St. Old San Juan
Barrachina is famous for the original piña colada (which was delicious) and classic Puerto Rican dishes that we loved. It gets really crowded when a cruise is in port so either ask for bar seating or get there early.
Nono’s – 100 Calle De San Sebastián, Old San Juan
Great casual bar and casual restaurant. It is more of a dive bar or pub feel, but they have the absolute best mojitos and the food is always good. Even if you don’t eat there try the mojito!
Ostra Cosa – 154 Calle del Cristo, Old San Juan
Great outdoor seating and food. It’s great to just people watch from here too! Try the garlic scallops and the alcapurrias they are delicious!
The Cave Bar and Restaurant – 201 Calle de San Francisco, Old San Juan
Great atmosphere. It’s a Cuban fusion restaurant with the old world Havana-feel inside. The pineapple pina colada is a must-try too!
