Why Chattanooga Is the Perfect Getaway Destination 🧡

Chattanooga is a city that offers the perfect blend of outdoor adventure, hospitality, and quirky charm. Whether you’re road-tripping from nearby cities or flying in for a long weekend, Chattanooga is surprisingly easy to explore. With a walkable downtown, affordable hotels, and fun things to see that range from natural wonders to artsy neighborhoods, it’s a perfect destination for couples, families, friend groups, and even solo trips.
How to Get Around Chattanooga
Getting around Chattanooga is pretty easy, especially if you’re staying downtown. The downtown area is very walkable, and we found it simple to explore major spots like the Tennessee Aquarium area, Walnut Street Bridge, restaurants, cocktail bars, and several neighborhoods on foot.
One of the best things about visiting Chattanooga is the free electric shuttle. CARTA’s Downtown Electric Shuttle runs from the Chattanooga Choo Choo to the Tennessee Aquarium, with stops along the way, making it a great option too.
If you plan to visit Lookout Mountain, Glen Falls Trail, Ruby Falls, Rock City, or Cloudland Canyon State Park, having a car is the easiest option because they are outside of the downtown area.
For evenings out downtown, rideshare works really well. If you plan to enjoy rooftop bars, breweries, speakeasies, or cocktails it’s the way to go.
Chattanooga quick transportation tips
- Downtown: very walkable
- Free shuttle: great for downtown, Aquarium area, Choo Choo, and nearby neighborhoods
- Car recommended: best for Lookout Mountain and Cloudland Canyon
- Parking tip: start early for popular hiking and mountain spots
- Rideshare: ideal for downtown nights out

This trendy and revitalized district is filled with art galleries, public murals, local markets, breweries, and some of Chattanooga’s top restaurants. 🏙️ Downtown / City Center
Home to many of Chattanooga’s biggest attractions and fun things to do like the Tennessee Aquarium, Hunter Museum, and umbrella street installations, downtown is perfect for first-time visitors who want to be in the heart of the action. We loved walking along the river and had no trouble finding parking close to the aquarium.
🍺 MLK District
A culturally rich area that blends history, music, and food. Home to the Bessie Smith Cultural Center and a growing number of bars and eateries, this area honors Chattanooga’s heritage with style. This area was fun and walkable (all of downtown Chattanooga feels safe and walkable) and we walked to some really great cocktail bars in this neighborhood.

Chattanooga 4-day Sample Itinerary (this is what we loved)
You can download or print a copy of the itinerary above ⬆️ to help you plan your own Chattanooga trip.
Day 1: Downtown + Southside Highlights
Morning
Start around downtown or the Southside Historic District. Walk the riverfront, then visit the Tennessee Aquarium for one of the city’s most popular attractions.
Lunch + early afternoon
Head toward the Hunter Museum of American Art area and enjoy the bluff views. Afterward, cross the Walnut Street Pedestrian Bridge and spend time at Coolidge Park and nearby North Shore shops (Ride the carousel at Coolidge). There are great lunch spots there too.
Late afternoon
Explore the Chattanooga Choo Choo area and Southside. This is a good time to browse the murals, Warehouse Row, or just relax at your hotel before dinner.
Dinner
Choose one of the article favorites such as Alleia, Public House, or the iconic Pickle Barrel if you want something more casual and fun.
Evening cocktails
Watch the sunset with cocktails at High Rail Rooftop Bar at The Chattanoogan Hotel, or stop into Broads at The Dwell Hotel for a glam cocktail-bar vibe.
Pro tip: If you stay downtown or in the Southside, you can do most of this day on foot and save driving for the mountain and day-trip days.
Day 2: Lookout Mountain + Iconic Chattanooga
Morning
Drive up toward Lookout Mountain and do Glen Falls Trail early. It is a short, rewarding hike with a hidden waterfall and a swimming or wading spot at the base.
Lunch + early afternoon
Choose one or two major attractions depending on your pace: Rock City Gardens, Ruby Falls, and/or The Incline Railway. If you only do one, Rock City is the top pick from the guide. Lunch break – Keep it flexible with a coffee break and sandwich at the scenic Starbucks at the top of Lookout Mountain if you want a quick, casual pause.
Afternoon
If you have extra energy, add a quirky stop at the Naughty Cat Cafe back in town or browse one of the neighborhoods you did not fully explore on Day 1. (make sure to book the Cat Cafe first)
Evening
For a relaxed night, grab dinner at TailGate Brewery or any other great restaurants in the downtown area.
Day 3: Day Trip to Cloudland Canyon State Park
Leave this day open for a scenic adventure outside the city. Cloudland Canyon is one of the best day trips from Chattanooga and the waterfall hike is the star of the day (we loved it most).
Early morning
Drive to Cloudland Canyon State Park in Rising Fawn, Georgia. Get there early so you can enjoy cooler temperatures and easier parking.
Main activity
Do the Waterfalls Trail to see Cherokee Falls and Hemlock Falls. The trail includes more than 600 steps, so pace yourself and bring plenty of water (i almost passed out on the way up because of the heat).
Midday
Take time for the overlooks, photos, and picnic areas. The canyon views are part of what makes this day worth it, so do not rush straight in and out.
Return to Chattanooga
Head back in the late afternoon and keep the evening easy. A casual dinner and a low-key drink downtown is perfect after a hiking day.
Day 4: Hidden Gems, Breweries, and a Fun Final
Morning
Start with breakfast at Maple Street Biscuit Company or a coffee stop before exploring the MLK District or North Shore more fully.
Late morning
Visit The Passage (Water Steps) near the Aquarium area, then swing by Umbrella Alley for photos and an easy downtown walk.
Lunch + afternoon
Choose a brewery-focused afternoon with WanderLinger Brewing Company and other Southside stops, or revisit any neighborhood you loved most.
Pre-dinner
If you missed it earlier, stop by The Dwell Hotel lobby/lounge or spend time around the Chattanooga Choo Choo complex for one last iconic city moment.
Final night cocktails + dinner
End with cocktails at Unknown Caller Speakeasy (our favorite) – one of the guide’s favorite hidden gems – then have a relaxed final dinner at a top pick you did not get to earlier.
Pro tip: This day works well as a flexible catch-up day, so feel free to swap in any favorite from Days 1 and 2 that you want more time to enjoy.
