8 Best Inside Passage Alaska Cruises for Glacier Viewing

An Alaska cruise through the Inside Passage can be one of the most beautiful vacations you will ever take, but choosing the right itinerary for your trip matters just as much as choosing the ship.

We love cruising to Alaska and have done both the Inside Passage sailings and sailings on larger ships that do not sail the Inside Passage. All of them were an amazing experience, but there is something special about sailing the Inside Passage and getting up close to a glacier where you can see and hear the glacial ice calving. It is a unique experience.

Two cruises that both say “Alaska Inside Passage” may offer completely different experiences. One may spend most of a day sailing through Glacier Bay, while another gives you only a few early-morning hours near a glacier. Port times can vary just as widely. Some ships remain in Skagway or Juneau until evening, while others offer shorter stops that make excursions feel rushed.

Victoria is another port detail worth checking carefully. Many round-trip Seattle cruises stop in Victoria late on the final night, sometimes for only three or four hours. That may be enough for an evening walk around the Inner Harbor, but it is not the same as having a full day to explore the city. It is one of our favorite hidden gem stops! For this list, we looked for Inside Passage Alaska cruises with:

• A dedicated glacier-viewing day or substantial scenic-cruising period
• Enough time in Alaska’s most popular ports
• An itinerary that feels balanced rather than rushed
• Appealing onboard spaces for watching the glacial scenery
• Convenient round-trip options, including several from Seattle
• Victoria port times that are clearly explained rather than treated like a bypass visit

What Is an Inside Passage Cruise?

An Inside Passage cruise travels through the sheltered coastal waterways, islands and fjords stretching from British Columbia into Southeast Alaska. Along the way, ships visit popular ports such as Ketchikan, Juneau, Skagway, Sitka and Icy Strait Point, with scenic cruising through places like Glacier Bay, Endicott Arm or Hubbard Glacier.

The calmer waterways and nearly constant mountain, forest and wildlife views are a big part of what makes an Inside Passage sailing special. However, itineraries vary, so look beyond the words “Inside Passage” and check the glacier-viewing days, port times and actual route before booking.

1. Royal Princess: Best Overall Inside Passage Cruise From Seattle

Royal Princess offers one of the strongest seven-night round-trip Seattle itineraries if you want both Glacier Bay and Alaska’s classic cruise ports.

A typical Alaska itinerary includes:

• Seattle
• Juneau
• Skagway
• Glacier Bay National Park
• Ketchikan
• Victoria
• Seattle

On a representative 2027 sailing, Royal Princess is scheduled to spend approximately 1:00-9:15 p.m. in Juneau, 6:00 a.m.-8:30 p.m. in Skagway and 6:00 a.m.–2:30 p.m. scenic cruising in Glacier Bay. These are particularly good times for Juneau and Skagway, allowing you to take longer excursions without feeling as rushed.

Why Royal Princess makes the list

Glacier Bay is the main reason to choose this itinerary. Rather than briefly passing one glacier, the ship spends much of the day sailing through a vast national park filled with mountains, wildlife and multiple glaciers. National Park Service rangers typically board the ship to provide information and help passengers understand what they are seeing.

Royal Princess also has plenty of open decks and indoor viewing areas, which is important in Alaska’s cool or rainy weather. Princess has a long history of Alaska cruising and generally does a good job incorporating the destination into the onboard experience.

The Victoria catch

The sample itinerary visits Victoria from approximately 9:00 p.m. until midnight. That is enough for a short nighttime walk or a compact excursion, but I would not choose this cruise specifically for Victoria. Think of it as an evening stop rather than a complete port day which is the only drawback to this itinerary because Victoria is beautiful.

2. Celebrity Edge: Best Combination of Ship Design and Victoria Time

Celebrity Edge is one of the most visually impressive ships sailing round trip from Seattle. It pairs a sophisticated and modern onboard experience with an itinerary visiting Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier. We absolutely loved sailing on Celebrity Reflection and felt it was an upscale, yet still casual experience.

The itinerary generally includes:

• Seattle
• Ketchikan
• Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier
• Juneau
• Skagway
• Scenic cruising in the Alaska Inside Passage
• Victoria
• Seattle

Celebrity’s official itinerary includes Ketchikan, Endicott Arm, Juneau, Skagway, Inside Passage cruising and Victoria.

Why Celebrity Edge makes the list

Edge has some of the best viewing spaces of any large Alaska cruise ship. The two-level Eden lounge, outward-facing public areas and Magic Carpet platform help connect the ship to the landscape outside.

This is also a good option for adults who want an elevated atmosphere, creative dining and contemporary design without moving all the way into the luxury-cruise price range.

A representative 2027 sailing cruises Endicott Arm from about 5:30–10:00 a.m., followed by Juneau from 1:30–10:00 p.m. Although the glacier portion is not a full calendar day, it is a dedicated and substantial scenic experience followed by a useful afternoon and evening in Juneau.

The best Victoria timing on this list

Celebrity Edge commonly stops in Victoria from approximately 5:30 p.m. until midnight. That is still an evening visit, but it is considerably more useful than arriving at 8:00 or 9:00 p.m. This gives you enough time for dinner, the Inner Harbour, evening tea at the Empress Hotel, Beacon Hill Park or a longer organized excursion.

3. Norwegian Encore: Best for Families and Plenty to Do Onboard

Norwegian Encore is another awesome round-trip Seattle option, particularly great for families, multigenerational groups and if you want a lively ship with many activities.

The seven-night itinerary commonly includes:

• Seattle
• Juneau
• Skagway
• Glacier Bay National Park
• Ketchikan
• Victoria
• Seattle

Norwegian currently lists Encore’s Seattle itinerary with Glacier Bay, Skagway, Juneau, Ketchikan and Victoria.

Why Norwegian Encore makes the list

Glacier Bay is once again the standout. It gives you a dedicated scenic day that feels like a major part of the vacation, not an attraction squeezed between two ports.

Encore is also designed with Alaska viewing in mind. The Observation Lounge provides expansive windows and comfortable seating when the weather is not cooperating. Outdoor decks offer additional viewing space on clear days.

The ship has more dining, entertainment and activity choices than many traditional Alaska ships, making it great for groups and families whose members may not all want the same vacation experience.

Port-time considerations

A representative 2027 schedule gives long port days in Juneau and Skagway, but the Ketchikan call can be comparatively short. Some NCL itineraries use Ward Cove, which is outside downtown Ketchikan, so transportation time should be included when planning the day.

Victoria is commonly scheduled from approximately 8:00 p.m. to midnight which is not ideal. That is workable for an evening highlights tour or a walk around the Inner Harbour, but not for a full exploration of the beautiful Garden City.

4. Holland America Eurodam: Best Traditional Alaska Cruise Experience

Holland America has been sailing Alaska for decades, and Eurodam offers an itinerary that emphasizes scenery, wildlife and the destination itself.

A typical seven-night Alaska Explorer sailing includes:

• Seattle
• Juneau
• Glacier Bay National Park
• Icy Strait Point
• Sitka
• Ketchikan
• Victoria
• Seattle

Holland America has select Eurodam Seattle sailings that include Glacier Bay, while its 2027 sailings also feature Juneau, Sitka, Ketchikan, Icy Strait Point and an evening Victoria visit. 

Why Eurodam makes the list

Eurodam is an especially good choice if you prefer a quieter, more traditional ship. It does not have the number of high-energy attractions found on Norwegian Encore or Royal Caribbean, but that can be an advantage in Alaska. It also has dedicated children to teen spaces in Club HAL.

The Glacier Bay day is the centerpiece, and Holland America’s Alaska programming often includes wildlife information, destination presentations and ranger narration.

This itinerary also includes Sitka and Icy Strait Point rather than Skagway. That makes it a little different from the standard Juneau, Skagway, Ketchikan route and offers more wildlife and coastal scenery viewing.

Port-time considerations

A representative June 2027 sailing schedules Juneau from approximately 12:30-10:00 p.m., Sitka from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. and Ketchikan from 6:30 a.m.-1:00 p.m. The long Juneau stop is excellent, while Ketchikan is more limited.

Victoria is typically an 8:00 p.m.-midnight call. It is enough time for a short evening outing but not a true Victoria sightseeing day.

5. Voyager of the Seas: Best for Royal Caribbean Fun

Royal Caribbean’s current Seattle schedules feature Voyager of the Seas on seven-night Alaska cruises. We first sailed the Inside Passage route from Seattle aboard Voyager and it was one of our favorite Alaska cruises. The ship had so many things to do, yet we still had enough time to enjoy the unique Alaskan scenery outside of our balcony!

Although the exact ship may change by season, the experience is familiar: a convenient Seattle departure, plenty to do onboard and long days in ports such as Juneau and Skagway.

The 2027 Voyager itinerary includes:

• Seattle
• A sea day
• Juneau
• Skagway
• Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier
• A sea day
• Victoria
• Seattle

Why Voyager of the Seas makes the list

The long Juneau and Skagway visits are excellent. There is time for whale watching, Mendenhall Glacier, the White Pass railway or longer excursions without immediately needing to rush back to the ship.

Voyager is also a practical option for families. It offers familiar Royal Caribbean entertainment and activities if you want more to do on the ship between ports.

The main compromise is that the itinerary has fewer Alaska port stops than Princess, Norwegian or Holland America. It also visits Dawes Glacier rather than Glacier Bay. Endicott Arm is beautiful, but access to the glacier can occasionally be affected by ice, weather or wildlife-related navigation restrictions. We absolutely loved our cruise on Voyager and were lucky with the weather.

Watch the Victoria time depending on the sailing

Royal Caribbean’s Victoria timing can vary considerably. Some comparable sailings have offered a greatl daytime call, while others arrive later. This is one itinerary where I would compare individual departure dates rather than assuming every week follows the same schedule.

6. Virgin Voyages Brilliant Lady: Best Adults-Only Inside Passage Cruise

Brilliant Lady brings Virgin Voyages’ adults-only cruise experience to Alaska with several itineraries sailing from Seattle. This is a great option for couples, groups of friends and adult cruisers who want beautiful scenery without giving up creative dining, nightlife and a more contemporary atmosphere onboard.

A typical itinerary includes:

• Seattle
• Scenic cruising through the Inside Passage
• Ketchikan
• Sitka or Juneau, depending on the departure
• Tracy Arm Fjord scenic cruising
• Prince Rupert
• A day at sea
• Seattle

On the Sitka version, Brilliant Lady is currently scheduled to visit Ketchikan from 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m., Sitka from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Prince Rupert from noon to 8:00 p.m. The separate Inside Passage and glacier-fjord cruising days provide plenty of time to enjoy Alaska’s scenery from the ship.

Why Brilliant Lady makes the list

Virgin Voyages is one of the most distinctive Alaska choices because every sailing is exclusively for adults. The onboard experience includes specialty dining without traditional specialty-restaurant surcharges, included gratuities, group fitness classes and free Wi-Fi.

Brilliant Lady also offers a very different atmosphere from a traditional Alaska cruise. Cruisers can spend the day watching glaciers and wildlife, then enjoy inventive restaurants, live entertainment and a happening nightlife in the evening.

The itinerary dedicates one day to cruising the Inside Passage and another to its glacier fjord. That makes the scenery an important part of the vacation rather than something squeezed into a regular port day.

Virgin currently lists Tracy Arm Fjord on its 2027 itineraries. However, glacier destinations can change because of ice, weather or safety conditions. Some Brilliant Lady sailings have visited Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier instead, so you should verify the scenic-cruising destination for your exact departure.

Important Virgin Brilliant Lady note: The final sailing of the Alaska season

The final Brilliant Lady Alaska cruise of 2027 is an especially interesting option. The eight-night September 2 sailing begins in Seattle and ends in Vancouver on September 10.

Its itinerary includes:

• Seattle
• Inside Passage scenic cruising
• Ketchikan
• Sitka
• Skagway
• Tracy Arm Fjord scenic cruising
• A day at sea
• Victoria
• Vancouver

The scheduled port times are:

• Ketchikan: 9:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.
• Sitka: 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m.
• Skagway: 6:30 a.m.–8:00 p.m.
• Victoria: 11:00 a.m.–7:00 p.m.

The long Skagway visit is excellent for the White Pass railway or a longer trip into the Yukon. Even more unusually, the ship spends eight daytime hours in Victoria. That is substantially better than the brief late-night Victoria calls found on many round-trip Seattle cruises. Also, because the cruise ends in Vancouver rather than returning to Seattle, this is also an excellent opportunity to add a few days in Vancouver after sailing. We love this particular sailing and are looking forward to booking it ourselves!

7. Celebrity Solstice: Best One-Way Alaska Cruise With Excellent Port Times

Celebrity Solstice offers one of the most appealing Alaska itineraries on this list if you are comfortable flying into Vancouver and returning home from Alaska.

The seven-night northbound cruise begins in Vancouver and ends in Seward, the cruise port most commonly used for Anchorage. There are also some roundtrip itineraries that return to Vancouver.

A representative May 2027 itinerary includes:

• Vancouver
• Scenic cruising through the Inside Passage
• Ketchikan
• Sitka
• Icy Strait Point
• Juneau
• Hubbard Glacier
• Seward

This itinerary stands out because it includes two nature scenery-focused days: an entire day cruising through the Inside Passage and a separate morning at Hubbard Glacier. It also offers four Alaska port days with much more useful hours than many round-trip Seattle cruises.

Noteworthy about Solstice

They also offer a 5-night Inside Passage cruise roundtrip from Vancouver and it has excellent port times in Ketchikan and Victoria. It’s great if you don’t have a full week, but still want to experience an Alaska cruise!

Why Celebrity Solstice makes the list

The route provides a deeper Alaska experience than many seven-night round-trip cruises. Rather than turning south after visiting Southeast Alaska, Solstice continues north toward Hubbard Glacier and Seward.

Hubbard Glacier is the largest tidewater glacier in North America. It stretches approximately 76 miles and has a face that is around seven miles wide. The glacier is also known for its frequent calving, when large sections of ice break away and crash into the water.

On Celebrity’s May 21, 2027 departure, Hubbard Glacier scenic cruising is scheduled from approximately 7:30–11:00 a.m. Although it is not a full calendar day, the glacier has its own dedicated morning without a port visit competing attention.

The earlier full day of Inside Passage cruising adds another substantial opportunity to enjoy Alaska’s coastal scenery and watch for whales, sea otters, bald eagles and other wildlife.

Flying to Vancouver can take a little more planning, but you can take an easy flight from Seattle there. You should arrive in Vancouver at least one day before embarkation. However, the improved route and lack of a token late-night Victoria stop can make the extra effort worth it.

8. Disney Wonder: Best Inside Passage Alaska Cruise for Families

Disney Wonder offers a seven-night round-trip Vancouver itinerary that combines classic Alaska ports, a dedicated glacier-viewing day and Disney’s family-friendly onboard experience.

A sample 2027 itinerary includes:

• Vancouver
• A day at sea cruising toward Alaska
• Glacier viewing along the Stikine Icecap
• Skagway
• Juneau
• Ketchikan
• A final scenic day at sea
• Vancouver

Disney calls the glacier-viewing area as the Stikine Icecap, with the ship typically sailing through Endicott Arm toward Dawes Glacier. This dedicated scenic day gives you the time to enjoy the fjord, waterfalls, floating ice and glacier views without needing to choose between sightseeing and a day in port.

Why Disney Wonder makes the list

Disney Wonder is one of the best Alaska ships for families (or friends) because the onboard experience is great for several generations. Children can enjoy Disney’s supervised youth clubs and character appearances, while adults have access to adult-only dining, lounges, entertainment areas and the Quiet Cove Pool.

Alaska also fits naturally with Disney’s storytelling style. The ship offers destination-focused activities alongside Broadway-style shows, rotational dining and familiar Disney characters. This can make the sea and scenic-cruising days especially enjoyable for children who may not want to spend the entire day watching the landscape.

A true Vancouver Inside Passage advantage

Sailing round trip from Vancouver allows Disney Wonder to travel through more of the Canadian Inside Passage than many cruises departing from Seattle. These sheltered waterways pass forested islands, coastal mountains and small communities, with many opportunities to watch for whales, dolphins and bald eagles.

Vancouver also makes a wonderful place to extend the vacation. Families can arrive a few days early to explore Stanley Park, Granville Island, the Vancouver Aquarium or other attractions before boarding the ship.

Glacier Bay or Dawes Glacier: Which Is Better?

For a first Alaska cruise, I would generally give the advantage to Glacier Bay.

Glacier Bay is an all-day national park experience with multiple glaciers, wildlife possibilities and ranger narration. It feels like an entire destination rather than a single viewpoint.

Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier offer a different experience. The ship travels through a narrow fjord surrounded by waterfalls, steep mountains and floating ice. It can feel more dramatic and intimate, but ice conditions sometimes prevent ships from reaching the closest viewing position.

Neither choice is wrong, but they are not identical. We sailed the Endicott Arm and had a perfect transit to Dawes Glacier, but each trip varies.

Choose Glacier Bay if:

• A long, dedicated glacier-viewing day is a priority
• You want ranger narration
• This may be your only Alaska cruise
• You prefer an itinerary built around scenery

Choose Endicott Arm and Dawes Glacier if:

• You love narrow fjords and waterfalls
• You prefer Celebrity or Royal Caribbean
• The ship itself is an important part of the vacation
• The itinerary provides better port times for your interests

How Much Time Do You Really Need in Victoria?

For a meaningful Victoria visit, look for at least five or six hours beginning no later than the early evening. That way you can enjoy the charming city during the daylight hours and night. The gardens and parks are a must-see in Victoria!

A 5:30 p.m.-midnight call provides time to explore the Inner Harbour, see the illuminated Parliament Buildings, have dinner and possibly take an organized tour.

An 8:00 p.m.-midnight visit is better treated as a bonus evening stop. By the time the ship clears passengers and you travel into town, the usable time may be closer to three hours.

A 9:00 p.m.-midnight call is very limited. I would not plan on Butchart Gardens or multiple attractions unless the cruise line offers a specially timed excursion.

If Victoria is one of your must-do destinations, consider:

• Celebrity Edge departures with a 5:30 p.m. arrival
• A Royal Caribbean sailing with a daytime call
• A longer Alaska itinerary
• Adding Vancouver or Victoria before or after the cruise

Is It Better to Cruise Alaska at the Beginning or End of the Season?

Early-season Alaska cruises in May often have lower prices, fewer crowds and snow still covering the mountains. Days can be cold, but May is also one of Southeast Alaska’s drier months. It can be a beautiful time to cruise if you are comfortable packing plenty of layers.

Late-season sailings in late August and September (our favorite) may also offer lower prices and fewer crowds, along with fall colors and a small but exciting chance of seeing the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis). We unexpectedly saw them on our last cruise, and it was an incredible bonus!

Northern lights sightings are never guaranteed because they require darkness, clear skies and sufficient solar activity. Earlier summer sailings have longer daylight hours, making sightings less likely. If the aurora is on your wish list, a late-season cruise gives you a better chance, but I would still choose the itinerary and port times first and treat the northern lights as a wonderful bonus.
