Why U.S. Beach Vacations Are Popular This Summer
A beach vacation can be one of the easiest summer trips to personalize around your schedule and budget. You can drive to a nearby coastal town, splurge on a beachfront resort, rent a larger property for a group, or stay a few blocks inland and walk or drive to the water.
We always love a great beach vacation, but saving money is especially important for our trips this year. NerdWallet’s 2026 Summer Travel Report found that 89% of summer travelers are taking steps to save money on travel costs, including driving instead of flying, comparing hotel prices, and looking for other ways to reduce overall trip costs.
That’s why we think beach towns are especially appealing. Beach towns can work especially well because the main attraction is often free. Beach days, sunset walks, historic districts, boardwalks, and scenic waterfront areas can fill much of an itinerary without requiring an expensive ticket for every activity.

How we chose these destinations: We considered current U.S. summer travel interest, the variety of activities available, ease of planning, and our own positive experiences in several of these amazing coastal destinations. This is not a ranking from first to worst. Each place is best suited to your own travel style choices.
Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach is one of those classic summer destinations that keeps showing up for a reason. It’s our favorite family choice when we have the whole gang (who are adults now). It has miles of beach, family attractions, mini golf, lots of restaurants, entertainment, and plenty of hotels and vacation rentals.
We love that Myrtle Beach is practical for families because it offers a lot to do beyond the sand. You can spend the morning at the beach, visit an amusement area in the afternoon, and still have an easy casual dinner without over-planning the day.
It is also a good choice if you want a beach trip that feels energetic. This is not the place for total seclusion, especially in peak summer, but it is a strong option if you want energy, activities, and convenience.
Best for: Families, budget-conscious travelers, multi-generational trips, and classic summer beach vacations.
Panama City Beach, Florida

Panama City Beach is a strong choice if you want beautiful Gulf Coast water, wide sandy beaches, and plenty of family activities. We try to visit at least once a year, and it has long been one of our family’s favorite easy beach getaways.
When our children were younger, they especially loved the typically clear, calm-looking Gulf water and the number of activities available nearby. Water conditions can change from day to day, but Panama City Beach often delivers the bright turquoise views people picture when planning a Florida Panhandle vacation.
Beyond the beach, you can book dolphin cruises, take a boat to Shell Island, visit St. Andrews State Park, shop at Pier Park, or choose from plenty of casual restaurants. Family trips with children or teens are perfect and they will have no trouble filling a few days.
If you prefer a quieter atmosphere you should consider staying toward the eastern or western ends of the area rather than directly beside the busiest attractions.
Best for: Families, Gulf Coast beach lovers, casual trips, and travelers who want beach time plus activities.
Good to know: Summer thunderstorms are common along the Gulf Coast, so schedule boat trips early in the day and keep one flexible indoor activity available.
Key West, Florida & the Keys

Key West and the rest of the Florida Keys are perfect if you want a non-traditional beach trip with personality. If you’ve read any of our other Key West guides, you know how much we love the Keys! It is not just about sand and water, although you’ll definitely find that too. The Keys bring a unique road trip drive with the Atlantic Ocean on your left and the Gulf on your right. It’s pure magic.
Key West is different from a traditional resort beach destination. Its biggest attractions are its colorful historic streets, sunset celebrations, restaurants, tiki bars, snorkeling trips, museums, and boat tours. Beach lovers can still visit places such as Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park, but if your main goal is a long, wide sandy beach you may prefer Clearwater or Panama City Beach.
See our YouTube video of Fort Zachary Taylor beach (our favorite!)
Summer can be hot, but the cheapest months are usually during the hottest times of the year in the Keys. So, the best strategy is to plan outdoor activities early in the day, take a pool or air-conditioning break in the afternoon, and save sunset cruises, cocktail bars, or waterfront dinners for the evening hours.
Best for: Couples, adult getaways, sunset lovers, food-focused travelers, and island-style trips without leaving the U.S.
Good to know: Key West is compact and walkable, but the entire Florida Keys region stretches for more than 100 miles. Decide whether you want to stay primarily in Key West or divide your trip between the Upper and Lower Keys.

Clearwater Beach, Florida

Clearwater Beach is one of the easiest Florida destinations to recommend if you want soft sand, calm-looking Gulf scenery, sunset views, and restaurants within reach of the beach.
Pier 60 is the center of much of the activity, particularly around sunset. You can also book dolphin cruises, spend a day on the sand, or take short side trips to Dunedin, St. Petersburg, or Tampa.
Clearwater works especially well for a shorter Florida getaway because Tampa International Airport is within convenient driving distance. It gives travelers a polished beach-town experience without requiring the much longer drive to the Florida Keys.
Best for: Couples, families, Gulf sunsets, boat trips, beach walks, and easy fly-in vacations.
Good to know: Clearwater Beach can become congested during busy weekends. Staying within walking distance of the sand and restaurants can make the trip considerably easier.
Folly Beach, South Carolina

Folly Beach is a relaxed coastal destination that pairs especially well with a Charleston trip. My mom and I included it in our Charleston girls’ getaway, and it offered a completely different atmosphere from the city’s historic streets and polished restaurants.
The area around Center Street has casual restaurants, surf shops, and beach bars, while the shoreline feels less resort-focused than larger destinations such as Myrtle Beach. You can also see the Morris Island Lighthouse from the northeastern end of Folly Island.
One of Folly Beach’s biggest advantages is its proximity to Charleston. Spend part of the day by the water, have lunch near the beach, and then return to the city for dinner, shopping, cocktails, or an evening walk.
Folly still becomes busy during summer weekends, and parking can be difficult. Arrive early, stay within walking distance, or visit on a weekday when possible.
Best for: Couples, friend getaways, surfers, Charleston add-on trips, and travelers who want beach time plus city attractions.
Good to know: Folly Beach is better suited to a relaxed beach-and-city combination than a self-contained resort vacation.
If you love lighthouses like we do you can combine this trip with our Florida coastal lighthouse road trip and see many more!
Ocean City, Maryland

Ocean City offers the classic East Coast beach-vacation combination: a long shoreline, a lively boardwalk, arcades, amusement rides, casual seafood, and plenty of sweet treats.
It is particularly convenient if you are driving from Maryland, Washington, D.C., Pennsylvania, Delaware, and surrounding Mid-Atlantic areas. Families can spend the morning at the beach, walk or bike the boardwalk later in the day, and finish with seafood or an evening attraction.
Ocean City is a busy summer destination rather than a quiet retreat. Traveling from Sunday through Thursday, staying a few blocks from the ocean, or visiting near the beginning or end of the summer season can make lodging more affordable.
Best for: Families, East Coast road trips, boardwalk lovers, amusement attractions, and nostalgic beach vacations.
Good to know: Check whether your hotel includes parking. Parking fees can change the true cost of an otherwise affordable room.
Seattle, Washington

Seattle may not be the first place people think of for a beach trip, but it deserves a spot on a summer coastal travel list because it is less crowded. It also appeared in Tripadvisor’s top domestic destinations for U.S. travelers in summer 2026.
It’s more of a waterfront city escape than a traditional beach vacation, but summer is one of the best times to visit. You can explore the beaches on the Puget Sound, Lake Union, Pike Place Market, take a ferry, enjoy waterfront views, visit nearby islands, or use Seattle as a starting point for an Alaska cruise.
This is a smart option if you want cooler temperatures, food, scenery, and outdoor activities without choosing a typical hot beach town.
Best for: Cruise travelers, food lovers, couples, city-plus-waterfront trips, and cooler summer weather.

How to Plan a More Affordable Summer Beach Vacation
A popular destination can still fit a reasonable budget when you compare the total trip cost rather than looking only at the hotel rate.
A few smart ways to save on your beach trip:
- Travel Sunday through Thursday instead of building the trip around a weekend.
- Check parking, destination fees, and resort fees before choosing a room.
- Stay a few blocks from the beach instead of directly beachfront.
- Look for accommodations with free breakfast, a kitchenette, or included beach equipment.
- Look at nearby airports if you are flying.
- Book refundable rates when prices are still moving.
- Consider late May, early June, or late August when school schedules allow.
- Plan a few free activities, like beach walks, sunsets, historic districts, and self-guided food stops.
- Check short term rentals like VRBO to save on groups or a more “home-like” stay.
If you’re traveling as a family, a place with free beach access, walkable restaurants, and hotels with kitchenettes can sometimes save more than choosing the cheapest hotel.
📌A short sailing can also be an approachable way to experience cruising for the first time. Before choosing one based only on price or length, see how a cruise travel planner can help you compare ships, cabins, itineraries, and the full vacation cost.
How to Choose the Best Summer Beach Destination for Your Trip
The right destination depends on the kind of vacation you want:
- Best for families who want plenty of activities: Myrtle Beach or Panama City Beach
- Best for an adult island getaway: Key West and the Florida Keys
- Best for soft sand and Gulf Coast sunsets: Clearwater Beach
- Best beach-and-city combination: Folly Beach and Charleston
- Best classic East Coast boardwalk trip: Ocean City
- Best for cooler summer weather: Seattle
- Best for a group on a tighter budget: Myrtle Beach, Ocean City, or Panama City Beach, especially when sharing a vacation rental
- Best for couples: Key West, Clearwater Beach, or Folly Beach
Think beyond the nightly room price when comparing destinations. Parking, resort fees, rental cars, restaurant prices, and the number of paid attractions you plan to visit can make a seemingly affordable destination more expensive.
The best choice really depends on you and your travel group. Your choice will depend on whether you want a lively beach scene, a romantic getaway, a family-friendly trip, or a relaxing coastal escape.

FAQs About Trending Summer 2026 Beach Destinations
Some of the top beach destinations for summer 2026 include Myrtle Beach, Key West, Panama City Beach, Clearwater, and Ocean City. Tripadvisor’s 2026 Summer Travel Index showed strong interest in East Coast and Florida beach destinations for U.S. trips this year.
Yes, Key West & the Keys can be great summer destinations, especially if you enjoy sunsets, walkable streets, restaurants, snorkeling, boat tours, and historic buildings. It can be hot in summer, so plan outdoor things in the morning and enjoy pool breaks or indoor spots (like cocktails) in the afternoon.
To save money on a summer beach trip, travel midweek, compare nearby airports, stay slightly away from the beach, book early, and consider late May, early June, or late August. Choosing hotels or rentals with a kitchen or free parking can also help lower the total trip cost.
Popular beach destinations will likely be busy during peak summer weekends and holidays. To avoid the biggest crowds, consider booking the trip during the week and choosing shoulder dates outside major holiday weekends like Memorial Day, 4th of July, or Labor Day.
Myrtle Beach and Panama City Beach are two of the strongest choices for families because both offer plenty of attractions, restaurants, and lodging options beyond the beach. Ocean City is another good option for families who enjoy boardwalks, arcades, and amusement rides.
Seattle is the coolest-weather option on this list. It offers beaches, waterfront parks, ferry rides, islands, food, and scenic views, although it is a coastal city trip rather than a warm-water beach vacation.

Final Thoughts on Choosing a U.S. Summer Beach Destination
The best summer beach destination is not necessarily the place receiving the most attention. It is the one that matches the way you actually like to travel.
Choose Myrtle Beach, Panama City Beach, or Ocean City for family activities and a lively atmosphere. Pick Clearwater for a classic Gulf Coast vacation, Folly Beach for easy access to Charleston, or Key West for sunsets, food, history, and time on the water. Seattle is the standout option when you would rather enjoy cooler weather and waterfront scenery.
Whichever destination you choose, leave some open space in the itinerary. Slow beach mornings, spontaneous seafood stops, and sunset walks are often the parts of a coastal trip that become the best memories that you talk about for years after the trip.
Author’s Note
We love easy, sunset-filled beach trips, and can see why beach destinations are trending again for this summer. There is something comforting about a trip built around sunshine, good food, pretty views, and a slower pace. We especially love destinations where you can mix relaxing moments with walkable towns, whether that is spotting unique buildings in Key West, walking the waterfront, or a casual seafood dinner after a beach day. ☀️🌊
