We always love a great beach vacation, but summer 2026 has a few extra factors working making beach trips even more attractive. Beach lovers want budget-friendly trips that feel worthwhile. NerdWallet’s 2026 Summer Travel Report found that 89% of summer travelers are taking steps to save money on travel costs, including driving instead of flying and choosing hotels based on the lower price.

That’s why we think beach towns are especially appealing. Many offer flexible stays, free or low-cost things to do, walkable entertainment areas, and easy road-trip potential. You can splurge on a nice beachfront hotel, or you can stay a little farther from the sand and still have a great trip.

What beaches are people looking at for this year? According to Tripadvisor’s 2026 Summer Travel Index, East Coast and Florida beach destinations are among the most booked places in the U.S. this summer. Myrtle Beach took the top domestic spot, while Key West, Panama City Beach, and Clearwater also landed in the top 10. They are also some of our favorites!

So, where should you book this summer? Think walkable beach towns, casual seafood dinners, less-crowded beaches, family-friendly attractions, sunset views, and enough things to keep the whole crew happy without needing a packed itinerary. The key is choosing the right beach destination for your travel style.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Myrtle Beach is one of those classic summer destinations that keeps showing up for a reason. It’s our favorite family choice when we have the whole gang (who are adults now). It has miles of beach, family attractions, mini golf, lots of restaurants, entertainment, and plenty of hotels and vacation rentals.

We love that Myrtle Beach is practical for families because it offers a lot to do beyond the sand. You can spend the morning at the beach, visit an amusement area in the afternoon, and still have an easy casual dinner without over-planning the day.

It is also a good choice if you want a beach trip that feels lively. This is not the place for total seclusion, especially in peak summer, but it is a strong option if you want energy, activities, and convenience.

Best for: Families, budget-conscious travelers, multi-generational trips, and classic summer beach vacations.

Panama City Beach, Florida

Panama City Beach is a strong choice if you want a Florida beach trip with wide sandy beaches, lots of family activities, and a fun vacation atmosphere. It has long been popular with families and spring/summer travelers, but it is also a good option for people who want a Gulf Coast beach trip with plenty of restaurants and entertainment nearby. We try to visit at least once a year. When our kids were young they loved it because the water here is more clear than Pensacola which is where we go often because it is so close to New Orleans.

The beach itself is the main draw, but you can also build in activities like dolphin cruises, boat tours, shopping, casual meals, and day trips around the area. If you’re traveling with kids or teens, it is one of the easier beach destinations to keep everyone entertained.

For a more relaxed trip, consider staying slightly away from the busiest central areas and driving in for restaurants or activities when you want them.

Best for: Families, Gulf Coast beach lovers, casual trips, and travelers who want beach time plus activities.

Key West, Florida & the Keys

Key West and the rest of the Florida Keys are perfect if you want a beach trip with personality. If you’ve read any of our other Key West guides, you know how much we love the Keys! Guess what, so do many others and of course it is on the list. It is not just about sand and water, although you’ll definitely find that too. The Keys bring a unique road trip drive with the Atlantic Ocean on your left and the Gulf on your right. It’s pure magic. Once you get to Key West there are colorful pastel houses, sunset cruises, historic buildings, seafood spots, tiki bars, snorkeling, and that relaxed island feeling that makes people want to come back again and again.

Summer can be hot, but the cheapest months are usually during the hottest times of the year in the Keys. So, the best strategy is to plan outdoor activities early in the day, take a pool or air-conditioning break in the afternoon, and save sunset cruises, cocktail bars, or waterfront dinners for the evening hours.

Best for: Couples, adult getaways, sunset lovers, food-focused travelers, and island-style trips without leaving the U.S.

Clearwater, Florida

Clearwater Beach is another Florida favorite that works well for a summer beach escape. It has soft sand, beautiful Gulf water, sunset views, and plenty of nearby restaurants and historic hotels.

Clearwater can be a great choice if you want a beach trip that feels easy but still close to a fun city (Tampa). You can spend most of your time on the beach, book a boat tour, visit Pier 60, or explore nearby areas like Dunedin or St. Pete for a little more local flavor.

It also works well if you want a Florida beach trip but don’t necessarily want the long drive down to the Keys. The flights into Tampa are usually reasonable from many areas.

Best for: Couples, families, Gulf Coast sunsets, beach walks, and easy Florida vacations.

Folly Beach, South Carolina

Best Folly summer trip beach view less crowded destinations

Folly Beach, South Carolina is a great summer beach destination if you want a relaxed coastal trip with easy access to Charleston. It is one of our favorite beaches that my mom and I detailed in our trip and itinerary on a Charleston Girls trip that included Folly Beach! It has a more casual, local-feeling vibe than some of the bigger beach towns, with surf shops, beach bars, and walkable areas near Center Street. There’s also a great lighthouse to see (Morris Island Lighthouse)!

One of the best parts of Folly Beach is that you can have a beach getaway and still be close enough to Charleston for restaurants, history, shopping, cocktails, and a more polished city experience. Spend the morning by the water, grab a casual lunch near the beach, and then head into Charleston for dinner or a sunset walk along The Battery.

Folly is also a good fit if you want a beach trip that feels fun but not overly resort-style. It can still get busy in summer, especially on weekends, so booking early and planning for parking is helpful.

Best for: Charleston add-on trips, couples, friend getaways, casual beach days, surfing, and trips with beach time plus city access.

If you love lighthouses like we do you can combine this trip with our Florida coastal lighthouse road trip and see many more!

Ocean City, Maryland

Ocean City is a classic East Coast summer destination with a boardwalk, beach, arcades, casual restaurants, and that nostalgic beach-town feel. It is especially popular for road trips from the Mid-Atlantic area for a summer trip you can reach by car.

This is a good pick if you want a beach vacation with structure. You can spend mornings by the water, afternoons on the boardwalk, and evenings sampling seafood or treats with a knockout view.

Like Myrtle Beach, Ocean City can get crowded in peak summer, so booking early and traveling midweek can help make the trip smoother and less expensive.

Best for: East Coast road trips, families, boardwalk lovers, and nostalgic beach vacations.

Seattle, Washington

Seattle discovery park beach and west point lighthouse

Seattle may not be the first place people think of for a beach trip, but it deserves a spot on a summer coastal travel list because it is less crowded. It also appeared in Tripadvisor’s top domestic destinations for U.S. travelers in summer 2026.

It’s more of a waterfront city escape than a traditional beach vacation, but summer is one of the best times to visit. You can explore the beaches on the Puget Sound, Lake Union, Pike Place Market, take a ferry, enjoy waterfront views, visit nearby islands, or use Seattle as a starting point for an Alaska cruise.

This is a smart option if you want cooler temperatures, food, scenery, and outdoor activities without choosing a typical hot beach town.

Best for: Cruise travelers, food lovers, couples, city-plus-waterfront trips, and cooler summer weather.

How to Save Money on a Summer 2026 Beach Trip

Because summer beach trips are in demand, it helps to be strategic. You don’t always have to skip the popular places, but you may need to adjust your timing or lodging.

A few smart ways to save on your beach trip:

  • Travel midweek instead of Friday to Sunday.
  • Compare hotels and vacation rentals before booking.
  • Stay a few blocks from the beach instead of directly beachfront.
  • Look at nearby airports if you are flying.
  • Book refundable rates when prices are still moving.
  • Consider late May, early June, or late August for lower crowds.
  • Plan a few free activities, like beach walks, sunsets, historic districts, and self-guided food stops.
  • Check short term rentals like VRBO to save on groups or a more “home-like” stay.

If you’re traveling as a family, a place with free beach access, walkable restaurants, and hotels with kitchenettes can sometimes save more than choosing the cheapest hotel.

📌You can also check for deals on flights and hotels at Travelocity, Hotels.com, or CheapOAir to save on your trip.

Choose Ocean City if you want an East Coast boardwalk vacation and great food.

Choose Seattle if you want waterfront views, great food, ferries to other towns, and cooler summer weather.

Final Thoughts: Summer Beach Trips Are Hot Again

Summer 2026 is shaping up to be a busy travel season, and beach destinations are clearly having a moment. The good news is that there are still plenty of ways to plan a trip that feels fun, relaxing, and still manageable.

The best approach is to choose a beach destination based on your personal travel style, not just what is trending. A busy town like Key West may be perfect for some travel buddies, while another traveler may be much happier with a sunset cruise in Clearwater Beach or a quiet morning in the Upper Keys (we love them all!).

Plan early, compare prices, and leave room in the itinerary for slow mornings, beach walks, and some spontaneous stops. Sometimes those are the moments that make a summer trip feel the happiest and keep us planning more.

Author’s Note

We love easy, sunset-filled beach trips, and can see why beach destinations are trending again for this summer. There is something comforting about a trip built around sunshine, good food, pretty views, and a slower pace. We especially love destinations where you can mix relaxing moments with walkable towns, whether that is spotting unique buildings in Key West, walking the waterfront, or a casual seafood dinner after a beach day. ☀️🌊
