We love that Myrtle Beach is practical for families because it offers a lot to do beyond the sand. You can spend the morning at the beach, visit an amusement area in the afternoon, and still have an easy casual dinner without over-planning the day.

It is also a good choice if you want a beach trip that feels lively. This is not the place for total seclusion, especially in peak summer, but it is a strong option if you want energy, activities, and convenience.

We try to visit at least once a year. When our kids were young they loved it because the water here is more clear than Pensacola which is where we go often because it is so close to New Orleans.

Key West, Florida & the Keys

Key West and the rest of the Florida Keys are perfect if you want a beach trip with personality. If you’ve read any of our other Key West guides, you know how much we love the Keys! Guess what, so do many others and of course it is on the list. It is not just about sand and water, although you’ll definitely find that too. The Keys bring a unique road trip drive with the Atlantic Ocean on your left and the Gulf on your right. It’s pure magic. Once you get to Key West there are colorful pastel houses, sunset cruises, historic buildings, seafood spots, tiki bars, snorkeling, and that relaxed island feeling that makes people want to come back again and again.

Summer can be hot, but the cheapest months are usually during the hottest times of the year in the Keys. So, the best strategy is to plan outdoor activities early in the day, take a pool or air-conditioning break in the afternoon, and save sunset cruises, cocktail bars, or waterfront dinners for the evening hours.

It is one of our favorite beaches that my mom and I detailed in our trip and itinerary on a Charleston Girls trip that included Folly Beach! It has a more casual, local-feeling vibe than some of the bigger beach towns, with surf shops, beach bars, and walkable areas near Center Street. There’s also a great lighthouse to see (Morris Island Lighthouse)!
